EXHIBITIONS

The impressive exhibitions in Alpinarium Galtür reveal how existential life in Tyrol can be.

Exhibitions in Galtür – experience the mountains with all your senses

How close beauty and terror lie together in the mountains, is something people in Tyrol know about from painful experience. The challenges of daily life in the mountains are revealed in an intense manner in the permanent exhibition ‘The fascination of snow; the legend of the avalanche’. Human endeavour to adapt to the natural surroundings are as much a theme here as the phenomena of climate change. The phenomenon of avalanches is central – how these menacing snow masses come about, how people protect themselves from them, and how they are able to survive in the event of an avalanche. As well as this permanent exhibition, Alpinarium Galtür also regularly presents special shows concerning topics from the mountains in Tyrol.

The range of exhibitions on offer in Galtür is complemented with the film ‘Mountains in motion’. A documentary by Alpine specialist and director Lutz Maurer is shown in the cinema hall built for this specific purpose. It portrays how the avalanche disaster of 23rd February 1999 changed Galtür and its people. An impressive triptych by Arthur Salner commemorates the 31 victims.

The exterior design of the Alpinarium, with its viewing platform, is also worth an in-depth look. There is a 360 degree panoramic view from there, which takes in Galtür and the mountains all around. And today ‘The Wall’ protects the district of Winkl and its people – at an impressive 345 metres in length, 19 metres high with 700,000 kilograms of steel. Since the horror of avalanches should really only be revealed in exhibits in Galtür!
