Ischgl Cannondale Schmuggler Challenge - Adventure Schmuggler Trails

The new Ischgl Cannondale Schmuggler Challenge is the highlight of 2011 for ambitious Enduro riders biking in Tyrol!

Endurobikes, like the Cannondale Claymore, and cable car transport are a big part of the Ischgl Cannondale Schmuggler Challenge; just like the Freeriders who are looking for steep descents – descents that will be by no means “easy”.  The multi-faceted challenge requires only the “complete-rider.”

The form of the race is exciting: Every “Schmuggler” biking trail is graded based on its difficulty (height, required technique, conditions, etc.) and has an associated point value.  At the end of each trail, the riders will receive a completion stamp in their “Schmuggler Book” – the more difficult descents completed, the more points received! In addition, there will be a few special challenges for the riders, with the various winners celebrating their victories during the evening! Challenges and enjoyment abound when you take part during your bike holidays in Austria.

Thorough preparation with maps, biking skills, knowledge of the conditions and a bit of creativity are just as important as your route choice.  Similarly important is the collective adventure, starting with the anticipation of the race during planning.  And to round off the day, each rider will get a “shot” at the brilliant finale party!

The Ischgl Cannondale Schmuggler Challenge is THE contest that combines the beautiful nature of the Silvretta Arena with peak performance and an intriguing collection of trails. A must when you spend your bike holidays in Austria!

STIFF COMPETITION FOR THE 20,000-EURO PRIZE: WORLD CHAMPION RUNNER-UP, MIRKE CELESTINO, WINS THE 16TH ISCHGL IRONBIKE COMPETITION

The fight for glory, reputation and a total of 20,000 Euros is over!  World Champion Runner-Up, Mirko Celestino from Italy achieved the win in the hardest race of the year, with a time of 3 hours, 59 minutes and 52 seconds.  Karl Platt from Germany came in second place (04:04:08) and World Champion Alban Lakata from Austria came in third (04:15:36).  For the women, Sally Bingham from Great Britain was able to secure victory with a time of 5 hours, 14 minutes and 45 seconds, beating Katrin Schweig (5:39:51) and Brigit Söllner (5:40:52).

A new record was set for participants in the 16th Ischgl Ironbike - Europe’s most renowned mountain bike marathon. On August 14th, approximately 900 mountain biking enthusiasts went to the Silvretta Mountainbike Arena to fight for a 20,000 Euro prize.  Three courses of differing lengths provided the participants with tailor-made challenges, along with three times the entertainment for the spectators.

The classic Ironbike course, 79 km long and with 3,820 metres of elevation change, required every bit of energy, even from veteran participants.  The long climb over the Greitspitze, followed by a breath-taking single-track descent into the Swiss Samnaun valley and another climb up to the Palinkopf made this race especially formidable and interesting.  It’s not called the Ischgl Ironbike for nothing!

Even hobby cyclists and amateurs had two courses to choose from at this mountain biking event in Tyrol.  The middle course wasn’t any less challenging:  the climb to Idalpe was steep and strenuous, while the later climb to Vellisscharte demanded every bit of energy from the well-conditioned bikers.  The descent through the Vellital was a welcome reward.  The trail selected by mountain bike legend Hans Rey allowed the cyclists to forget all of the difficulties in the early part of the race: they were met by a happy 1,200-metre solid downhill to the finish.

The middle course by numbers: 48 km long with 2,050 metres in elevation change.

The “small course”, which was 27 km long and had an elevation change of only 700 metres, was designed for ambitious hobby cyclists looking to take in the championship atmosphere.

In addition to the excitement on the trails other events were taking place, such as the Trial-Show from Trials World Champion Tom Öhler, who showed that anything is possible on two wheels.  The spectacular mountain bike weekend in Ischgl was capped off by the main awards ceremony and village festival. A perfect end to an amazing weekend mountain biking in Tyrol!
