On 23 February 1999, Galtür was struck by one of the worst avalanche disasters in Austrian history. As a direct consequence, a 345-metre-long, 19-metre-high protective wall made of 700,000 kilograms of steel was constructed. This gave rise to the Alpinarium. There, the history of the disaster is explored in a dedicated memorial room as well as in changing exhibitions on the dynamics of the mountain world (Alpine orogeny, climate, avalanches).
This combination of a protective structure, a memorial and an interactive museum exists in this form only in Galtür.
