Galtür celebrates cheese: 31st International Alpine Cheese Olympics

On 27 September 2025, Galtür will become the centre of Alpine cheese artistry. At the 31st International Alpine Cheese Olympics, dairy farmers from all over Europe will gather to present their best handmade Alpine cheeses – a feast for the palate, the senses and tradition. Over 100 alpine dairies from Austria, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and Liechtenstein will submit their products to the judgement of an expert jury.

Every year at the end of September, Galtür becomes a meeting place for master cheesemakers, connoisseurs and friends of Alpine tradition. The International Alpine Cheese Olympics has long established itself as a showcase for authentic cheese-making and brings together dairy farmers from across the Alpine region. From 10 a.m., the Galtür Sports and Culture Centre opens its doors to all cheese lovers. Visitors can look forward to an extraordinary variety of flavours and textures – from mild and creamy to spicy and strong, there is something to make the hearts of true cheese fans beat faster. The best cheeses in the categories of hard, semi-hard, soft and sour milk cheese, as well as cheese with added spices or herbs, are awarded the coveted Sennerharfen in gold, silver and bronze. A special highlight is the children's jury, which blind tastes the cheeses and selects its personal favourite to receive the "Dreikäsehoch Prize".

Tradition, craftsmanship and regionality in action

The International Alpine Cheese Olympics is much more than just a competition: it is a showcase for traditional alpine farming, artisanal production and respectful treatment of regional agriculture. Only cheeses made from fresh raw milk on registered alpine pastures – without any industrial processing – are eligible to participate. Since its inception in 1994, the event has been a strong symbol of quality, sustainability and living tradition.

A day for the whole family

Admission costs €15. Groups of ten or more people receive a reduced rate of €12 per person if they register in advance. The atmosphere is friendly, enjoyable and down-to-earth – just as the region has always been. In addition to culinary delights, guests can look forward to a festive parade and a varied programme of events with musical entertainment and insights into life on the alpine pastures.

If you want to taste genuine alpine cheese, meet the dairymen in person and experience a piece of alpine culture, don't miss this event. The Alpine Cheese Olympics in Galtür have long been a fixture in the culinary calendar of the Alpine region.
