Next Saturday, a part of the trail running scene will meet for the 2nd edition of the Paznaun Ischgl Ultra Trails (PIUT). More than 1,000 participants will ensure an impressive starting field and top sporting performances on alpine terrain.
With distances of 100 and 85 kilometres, there are both very long routes with up to 6,300 metres of altitude difference as well as races over 50 kilometres and shorter distances of 20 kilometres. At the centre of all routes is the Paznaun High Trail - one of the most impressive routes in the region, leading through the entire valley and offering breathtaking scenery.
Favourite roles nicely distributed - Mühlbacher, Nussbaumer, Hinterseer
A look at the start list shows that the 2nd edition of the PIUT also has a top-class field. Last year's winner Marie-Luise Mühlbacher is also a strong contender over the 85 kilometres this year. In the men's race, Johannes Nussbaumer and Johannes Hinterseer are among the favourites. Local hero Martin Mattle can also be expected to do well in his home race - excitement is guaranteed.
Paznaun in running fever - See, Kappl, Ischgl, Galtür
With the comprehensive race programme, there is a big trail running festival in Paznaun on Friday and Saturday. Running will take place from the front to the back of the valley - the route connects the four villages of See, Kappl, Ischgl and Galtür, which together provide an impressive stage for the event.
The starts of the long distances (100 km, 85 km) take place on Friday from 23:00 in See. On Saturday from 06:00 the largest group will start over 50 kilometres in Kappl. From 08:30 there will be running in Galtür, before the action then concentrates on Ischgl with the runs, finishes and the start over 20 kilometres - this is also where the large event area including the expo area, start and finish arch and the stage for the award ceremony are located.
Supporting programme & sustainability
A special highlight is the PIUT KIDS Run presented by Volksbank Tirol on Friday from 16:00, where over 200 young runners will get their first taste of trail running. Music, regional cuisine and a varied supporting programme for spectators and accompanying persons will also ensure a good atmosphere.
The PIUT also sees itself as a sustainable event and favours reusable cups, regional added value and environmentally conscious travel options. The route leads through the Kaunergrat Nature Park, whereby great importance is attached to respecting the sensitive Alpine landscape.
